Baltimore Red Light Therapy

Red Light Therapy at Very Well

You’ve never seen red light therapy like this before!

Our next-level red light therapy bed is was developed based upon the latest studies in efficacy, irradiance levels, positioning, and timing. The included wavelengths of 630(nm), 660(nm), 810(nm), 850(nm), and 980(nm) not only span the full capabilities of light-based medicine, but the quantity, intensity, and positioning of the LEDs can accomplish much more in less than half the time of red light treatments elsewhere. (Verified by third-party lab testing.)

If used regularly, our specific wavelengths could offer benefits in:

  • Pain relief and healing (including from arthritis, wounds, and injuries)

  • Weight loss (including fat burning, cellulite reduction, and metabolism issues)

  • Skin care (including hair growth, sun damage, scar reduction)

  • Anti-aging (including fine lines and wrinkles, under-eye circles and bags, acne, rosacea)

  • Athletic performance (including post-workout recovery, muscle building)

  • Brain health (including cognitive performance, reducing depression and anxiety, Parkinson's, tinnitus)

  • Other (including stem cell regeneration, multiple sclerosis, asthma, hypertension, liver function, fertility, and sperm motility)

Our advice? If you are interested in relief from specific symptoms or conditions, do a web search for “red light for [condition]” or “photobiomodulation for [condition],” and make note of the results. Many trials have been done on specific wavelengths. Chances are, the effective ones are (or are close to) the ones offered in our therapy.

What It's Like

A red light treatment at Very Well is quick, easy, and even fun. For 16 minutes, your whole body will absorb the powerful wavelengths from all directions as you lie comfortably on our cutting-edge bed. (Unlike elsewhere, it will not be necessary to turn over midway through the treatment or try to adjust yourself to get the most coverage.)

You may expose all of your skin down to your underwear for the most benefit. The bed is fully sanitized after each use.

If you like, you may bring your earbuds and listen to relaxing music. Eye coverings are provided if desired.

We recommend you prepare by wearing comfortable clothing you can get dressed again in quickly. Please do not wear makeup if you would like the light to have its full effect on your face.

The History of Red Light Therapy

Red Light therapy—also referred to as photobiomodulation—was accidentally discovered by a Hungarian physician named Endre Mester in 1967 at the Semmelweis Medical University in Budapest, Hungary. Mester noticed that red light helped promote hair growth and wound healing in rats.

In 1993, Quantum Devices developed a light-emitting diode (LED) for NASA to use in their plant growth experiments. The experiments demonstrated that red light wavelengths could boost plant growth, and their scientist noticed that, with exposure, his skin lesions began to heal faster, as well. Between 1995 and 2003, a series of NASA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contracts funded experimentation on medical uses of LEDs. Near-infrared light was shown to speed healing of wounds, particularly those starved of oxygen, by boosting the production of growth factor proteins, collagen, and blood vessels. NASA began to study the use of LEDs to increase the metabolism of human cells and stem the loss of bone and muscle in astronauts.

The Science

The wavelength of light is defined as the distance between two successive peaks of light waves. All visible light falls within a wavelength range of 400–700 nanometers (nm). Different wavelengths of light, even light beyond the visible range past red (or infrared), have been shown to penetrate and absorb differently in the human body, and therefore produce different effects.

Red light between 630(nm) and 700(nm) generally:

  • Helps promote blood circulation

  • Brings increased oxygen and nutrients to the skin surface

  • Helps with collagen creation, minimizing the signs of aging

Near-infrared light between 700(nm) and 1100(nm) generally:

  • Penetrates deeper into the body and can reach muscle tissue and nerves

  • Helps reduce inflammation and pain

  • Supports cellular regeneration

  • Reduces wound and injury healing time

Who May Not Want to Use This Treatment

Although there are no known side effects to red light therapy, and it is generally considered safe and beneficial, you should not use this service if you are pregnant or sensitive to bright light. Our bed has a weight limit of 330 lbs. (150 kg) and due to its curved shape may be difficult to access for those with mobility issues. If you have any concerns about accessibility, please call us and we'll see how to best address them. If you have any specific health conditions that you have concerns about exposing to red light therapy, please consult with your physician before booking an appointment.

Note: Red Light Therapy sessions may be purchased individually, and they are also included in our VERY WELL QoL(+) membership. The sessions are also discounted in our VERY WELL QoL and OPTIMAL LIVING COMMUNITY memberships. Click here to compare all of our monthly memberships.
