PEMF Therapy in Baltimore
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy at Very Well
What is PEMF Therapy?
Every cell in your body carries an electrical charge. That charge is what allows cells to communicate, absorb nutrients, expel waste, and repair themselves. When cellular voltage is compromised — through injury, chronic illness, aging, stress, or simply the accumulated wear of daily life — those processes slow down. You feel it as pain that won't resolve, fatigue that doesn't lift, sleep that doesn't restore, and a body that seems to have lost its ability to bounce back.
PEMF therapy — pulsed electromagnetic field therapy — works by delivering precisely calibrated bursts of low-frequency electromagnetic energy into your body's tissues. These pulses act on voltage-gated calcium channels in cell membranes, triggering a cascade of biological responses: increased cellular energy (ATP) production, reduced inflammation, improved circulation, and activation of the body's own repair mechanisms.
Research published in Scientific Reports found that PEMF selectively stimulates state 3 mitochondrial respiration — the type specifically linked to ATP synthesis — without broadly ramping up all mitochondrial activity. In other words, PEMF doesn't just stimulate the body generally. It targets the precise cellular mechanism that packages energy — the same mechanism that powers recovery, repair, and resilience.
The electromagnetic pulses pass through every type of tissue — skin, fat, muscle, bone, fascia, and organs — without being absorbed or blocked. This is what separates PEMF from surface-level treatments: it reaches the structures that most therapies can't.
No needles. No drugs. No side effects at therapeutic doses. Just your cells doing what they were designed to do — better.
What Can PEMF Therapy Help With?
PEMF has one of the most extensive research profiles of any non-invasive wellness modality. Because it works at the cellular level — and because every cell in the body responds to electromagnetic signals — the range of conditions it can meaningfully support is unusually broad.
The FDA has cleared specific PEMF devices for bone fracture healing since 1979. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a focused form of PEMF, is FDA-cleared for treatment-resistant depression. Beyond these cleared applications, a large and growing body of peer-reviewed research supports PEMF for the conditions listed below.
Our advice: Search 'PEMF for [your condition]' to explore the research on your specific concern. The evidence base is extensive — and growing.
Pain & Musculoskeletal Conditions
A 2024 systematic review of 17 randomized controlled trials involving 1,197 patients found that PEMF therapy produced a 60% decrease in pain scores and significant improvement in quality of life for osteoarthritis patients.
• Chronic pain • Osteoarthritis (knee, hip, spine) • Back pain and sciatica
• Neck pain and cervical disc issues • Shoulder pain and impingement • Arthritis
• Carpal tunnel syndrome • Tendinitis • Fibromyalgia • Post-surgical pain and swelling
• Bone fracture healing support • Neuropathy • Headaches and migraines
Sleep, Mood & Mental Health
A 2025 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 485 volunteers found that PEMF therapy targeting vagus nerve stimulation produced significant improvements in both sleep quality and anxiety levels, with 16 Hz showing the strongest results.
• Insomnia and poor sleep quality • Anxiety and chronic stress • Depression • PTSD
• Brain fog and difficulty concentrating • Low motivation • Mood dysregulation • Burnout
• Medication-resistant depression (TMS — a focused form of PEMF — is FDA-cleared for this)
Recovery & Athletic Performance
By improving microcirculation, reducing inflammation, and boosting ATP production, PEMF helps the body recover faster from exertion, injury, and surgical procedures — making it a tool used by professional sports teams and elite athletes worldwide.
• Post-workout muscle recovery • Sports injuries • Tendon and ligament repair
• Pre-competition preparation • Improved circulation and oxygen delivery
• Reduced exercise-related inflammation • Faster return to training
Systemic & Whole-Body Health
Because PEMF works at the cellular level throughout the entire body, its benefits extend well beyond any single system. Many clients use it not to address a specific condition but to maintain cellular health, energy, and resilience as part of a broader wellness practice.
• Immune system support • Reduced systemic inflammation • Improved circulation and vascular health
• Wound and tissue healing • Cellular energy and vitality • Metabolic support
• Detoxification support • Anti-aging at the cellular level
What Does a PEMF Session at Very Well Feel Like?
The Setup
PEMF sessions at Very Well take place privately on our comfortable, professional-grade contoured full-body bed — purpose-built for therapeutic sessions, not the consumer mats you've seen online. You lie fully clothed. No preparation is needed. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes.
If you'd like to focus the treatment on a specific area — a painful knee, a tense lower back, a stiff shoulder — our optional smaller pad can direct the PEMF's energy precisely where you need it most.
The Experience
Most clients describe a subtle pulsing or tingling sensation — similar to the feeling just before a limb 'wakes up' from being asleep, but calm and deeply relaxing rather than jarring. Many find it meditative. Some feel almost nothing during the session and simply notice the effects in the hours or days that follow: reduced pain, clearer thinking, better sleep, or an easing of tension they'd stopped noticing they were carrying.
The Frequency Conversation
Every session at Very Well begins with a short conversation about your goals for the day. Based on that, we'll do one of two things:
• Fine-tune the frequency to specifically support your objective — targeting pain, sleep, recovery, mood, energy, or any specific concern.
• Apply 7.83 Hz — the Schumann Resonance — the frequency that matches the Earth's own natural electromagnetic field. This is what we call the 'chicken soup' frequency: it doesn't target any single condition, but works to bring the body's interconnected systems into broad balance.

The History of PEMF — From Tesla to Today
Magnetic therapy may stretch back thousands of years, to the use of naturally magnetic lodestones to treat disease and ease symptoms. By the Middle Ages, physicians theorized that the life force animating the body could be strengthened by magnets. In the 1800s, French-Russian engineer Georges Lakhovsky theorized that every cell had its own electromagnetic frequency — and that cells might respond to frequencies imposed upon them from outside.
Building on Lakhovsky's work, Nikola Tesla discovered the rotating magnetic field and invented the electrical coil that still forms the basis of PEMF machines today. Throughout the 20th century, scientists around the world studied electromagnetism for therapeutic use. By the 1950s, researchers discovered that damaged bone — and subsequently soft tissue — responded with enhanced repair in the presence of certain electromagnetic fields.
In the 1980s and 90s, manufactured PEMF devices gained widespread adoption across Europe. In the 21st century, clinical research has confirmed specific beneficial applications: the FDA cleared PEMF for bone fracture healing in 1979, and TMS (a focused form of PEMF) has since become a mainstream treatment for medication-resistant depression. The work of multiple Nobel Prize-winning scientists has validated key aspects of PEMF's mechanisms of action.
Today, PEMF is used by professional sports teams for athlete recovery, by hospitals for post-surgical healing, by mental health practitioners for depression, and by wellness centers like Very Well for the full range of physical and mental concerns its clients bring.
Who Should Not Use PEMF Therapy
PEMF is a powerful modality, and as such, is not appropriate for everyone. Do not use PEMF therapy if you:
• Have an implanted medical device (pacemaker, cochlear hearing device, glucose monitor, spinal cord stimulator, or similar)
• Have an implanted magnetic device — including those deemed 'unsafe for MRI'
• Are pregnant
• Are actively bleeding or hemorrhaging (outside of normal menstruation)
• Have blood clots and have not been cleared by a physician
• Have had an organ transplant
• Have injuries or conditions that have not been evaluated by a licensed healthcare provider
If you are unsure whether PEMF is appropriate for your situation, please consult your physician before booking — or schedule a free consultation with our Wellness Concierge. Book a Free Consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Static magnets deliver a constant, unvarying field — limited and inconsistent. TENS works at the surface level, stimulating nerve endings in the skin. PEMF is fundamentally different: pulsed electromagnetic fields
penetrate all tissues — bone, muscle, fascia, and organs — inducing micro-currents at the cellular level throughout the entire body, not just at the surface. The mechanism of action is cellular, not neurological.
-
Some clients notice meaningful improvements after a single session. For specific ongoing conditions such as chronic pain, sleep issues, or anxiety, we typically suggest a series of sessions over 4–6 weeks, then reassessing. For general wellness and maintenance, many clients schedule weekly or bi-weekly sessions long-term. Your first session includes a brief conversation to calibrate the approach to your specific objectives.

7.83 Hz is the frequency of the Earth's natural electromagnetic field — what scientists call the Schumann Resonance. It sits at the theta-alpha brainwave boundary associated with deep relaxation and meditative states. We offer this as our 'chicken soup' frequency: it doesn't target any single condition but works to bring the body's interconnected systems into broad balance. For clients who aren't sure where to start, it's often the perfect choice.
-
Research supports PEMF as a non-pharmacological option for both. A 2025 double-blind RCT found significant reductions in anxiety and improvements in sleep with PEMF. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) — a high-intensity, focused form of PEMF — is FDA-cleared for treatment-resistant depression, with clinical response rates of 50–60% in patients unresponsive to medication. While our full-body wellness PEMF is not a medical TMS device, the research on PEMF's effects on mood and the autonomic nervous system is meaningful and growing.

30-minute sessions start at $60 (or $54 per session with a 10-session package). 60-minute sessions are $110 (or $99 per session in a package). PEMF is also included in our monthly memberships — from $48 per session with our CORE membership — and in several Health FOUNDATION packages that combine PEMF with other services for greater results and savings.
-
Absolutely — and we actively encourage it. PEMF works as an exceptional primer for other therapies. If combining PEMF with acupuncture, massage, or red light therapy, schedule PEMF first. The cellular activation and improved circulation from PEMF measurably enhances the effectiveness of treatments that follow. Several Health FOUNDATION packages are built around this principle.

PEMF has a strong safety record spanning over 40 years of clinical use. It is non-invasive, drug-free, and uses non-ionizing electromagnetic fields similar in nature to those present in the Earth's environment. No toxic side effects have been documented at therapeutic intensities. That said, it is not appropriate for everyone — see the contraindications section above.
